Evolving practice patterns in treatment of major retinal diseases in Singapore.

چکیده
Dear Editor, Neovascular (“wet”) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) are amongst the most common causes of blindness.1-3 Traditionally, these conditions were treated with thermal laser photocoagulation, however, the advent of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has revolutionised the treatment of these diseases.1,4,5 These anti-VEGF agents (ranibizumab and bevacizumab) aim to stop retinal angiogenesis and reduce macular oedema. Numerous trials have evaluated the effi cacy of these treatments in western populations, however, there are no clear guidelines for antiVEGF use in Asian countries where the pattern of retinal disease is different. This study surveyed the current practice patterns of ophthalmologists in Singapore with regards to the use of anti-VEGF and established therapies for the management of 3 major retinal disease: AMD, DME and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

Cell based therapies in retinal diseases
Background Degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. The principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. To briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among ...
متن کاملMorphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space
Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...
متن کاملClinical Approaches of Retinal Diseases in Pregnancy
Pregnancy leads to significant changes in the body, which potentially affect the retina. Pregnancy can induce disease such as that seen in hypertensive retinopathy and choroidopathy. It can cause exudative retinal detachments in the HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), ...

Background and Aim: Many causes of blindness or vision impairment are treatable, and their irreversible complications can be prevented by early diagnosis and proper treatment. Thus, the current study aimed at investigating the epidemiology of various eye diseases in patients (i.e.760 cases) referring to the ophthalmic clinic of Vali-e-Asr hospital in Birjand (Dec.22, 2014-Jun 20, 2015). Materi...
